About

The Society

Read. Travel. Belong.
Three women laughing together on a sunlit village walk — in coats and scarves with backpacks and walking poles.

Literary escapes for women who would rather walk a landscape than just read about it.

Each retreat begins with a curated reading list — books that take you to the place before the place takes you. You arrive having read the same pages as a small group of women; you spend the week walking the places those books describe, talking about them with women who've read them too, and discovering that the people you came to meet are the ones you didn't know yet.

The Society's competition isn't another retreat. It's not going — the slow accumulation of a calendar full of obligations and empty of anything (or anyone) to look forward to. The retreat is the threshold. The books are the preparation. The women are why you stay.

A few things the Society is not.

We use the word literary escape on purpose. The reading-retreat category, as Vogue and others currently use it, means sit somewhere quiet and read. The Society means the opposite: the reading happens in the months before, so the place itself can be the experience when you arrive.

Who finds the Society — and why she stays.

She reads for escapism and ideas, and she always wants to talk about what she's reading. Her people are scattered — friends in other cities, no local travel partner. She was adventurous once; corporate work sanded it off, and the calendar filled in around her with obligations.

She has either never tried a hosted retreat before, or she's been waiting to find one that doesn't feel like a tour group, a workshop, or a study-abroad-for-adults program. She wants real conversation in a place she's only read about. She wants to feel like the woman she remembers being.

The Society is built for her.

The Society sits inside a small portfolio.

Early & Away is the travel advisory — private literary trips and book-club charters planned one-on-one. The Latchkey Readers is the Gen-X book club community. Three brands, one operations spine, three different jobs.

The Departure Shelf is the reading-list series under the Society — published reading tracks that anchor each literary escape and serve as standalone curation for anyone who simply wants better book recommendations from a literary traveler.

First word, on everything.
